Description: In this three-hour workshop, we’ll start from the basics of CNC milling and engraving and work our way up from there! In the first hour, we’ll start with some classroom instruction, discussing common terminology, tooling and tool holding, work holding, feeds and speeds, and more. In the second hour, attendees will get hands-on experience with Vectric VCarve, the program we use to create the tool paths for CNC engraving, creating their own customized engraving toolpath. Finally, in the third hour, they’ll get hands-on practice setting up and running their engraving on our CNC router!
Attendees will leave this workshop with a custom engraved wood sign, a Vectric VCarve makerspace account, and the knowledge necessary to take the next step and create more complex engravings and profiles.
A Windows or Mac laptop is required for this class; attendees are encouraged to bring their own, but loaner laptops are available for anyone not able to do so.
Safety glasses and ear plugs/muffs will be provided, but if you have your own, you’re welcome to bring them!
As this class involves significant use of some of the largest power tools in our shop, this class is limited to ages 18+ (16+ with a parental waiver).
All visitors coming to Open Workshops for the first time must sign a liability waiver prior to entering the shop. Attendees under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
A Windows or Mac laptop is required; we recommend you bring your own. We'll supply all other required materials, tools, and supplies for the workshop. You are welcome to bring your own PPE if you have safety glasses, hearing protection, or a respirator, but we have plenty to borrow if you don't!
